Getting Ahead in Car Insurance
Embarking on a new career can be a daunting experience, but with plenty of research through home tuition it need not be as scary as it first appears. Before I worked for a car insurance company I was a mechanic, which required very little office based skill, but plenty of attention to detail, determination and problem solving! After a few years though, the hard physical work began to take it’s toll and I decided that I wanted to do a job that it was easier on the back than wrestling with an engine on a car up on ramps.
The first step was to get some skills under my belt that meant I could leave physical work behind and do something that was office based, so I decided to enrol on some distance learning courses for basic IT training. Home tuition based on creating and using spreadsheets, documents and presentation software meant that I was soon ready to apply for a different type of job altogether.
Having worked in the motor trade, it seemed fitting to apply for a job in car insurance when one appeared. The car insurance company advertising the position specialised in classic cars and modified vehicles – something I not only knew all about, but also had a passion for. One of the reasons I was offered the position was because I understood all aspects of the modifications that affected insurance, as well understanding the needs and expectations of the person asking for a quote – car enthusiasts are a funny lot some would say – but I wouldn’t have had a chance without the skills I learned through home tuition.
This experience has made me realise that to get the job of your dreams, you need to have a very special mix of skills, and a desire to learn. I have also learned that to be good at the job that you do, you need a passion for the industry. I am sure I would not get the same amount of satisfaction out selling insurance for anything else, and I am also sure that someone without a passion for cars could not be as successful at selling car insurance as I am.
